Microclimate and seed bank under Pithecellobium keyense (Fabaceae) in a coastal scrubland

چکیده

Abstract Microclimatic conditions affect seeds' survival, dormancy, and germination, which are determinants in vegetation succession recovery. The semiarid coastal scrublands of Yucatan, Mexico very important because the environmental services they provide thus, studies needed disturbed sites relation to seed viability microclimate. In this study, we characterized microclimate bank under Pithecellobium keyense s hrubs, during rainy dry seasons. We collected soil samples measured microenvironmental variables adult P. at three different positions canopy every studied individual (“open” or completely sunny, “half‐shaded,” placed border canopy, “fully shaded” next stem shrub). Photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD), minimum night‐time temperature, maximum daytime temperature behaved differently among both During season, was no microenvironments, while dry, highest found fully shaded lowest open position. had an effect on probability Chuburná; stronger season. Seed mass, shape, and persistence in the soil seed bank of Israeli coastal sand dune flora

Question: Are seed mass and shape related to persistence in the soil seed bank among 54 species of the Israeli flora? Search method: Persistence was determined by soil seed bank investigations in which the fraction of non-germinated viable seeds was regarded as the persistent soil seed bank. When seedling emergence had ceased but before new seeds were shed, all soil from the upper 5 cm of 120 q...

Soil seed bank and seed dormancy in wild populations of lima bean (Fabaceae): considerations for in situ and ex situ conservation.

Seed dormancy and its impact on the soil seed bank for wild Lima bean (Phaseolus lunatus) populations were studied in the Central Valley of Costa Rica. Five populations were selected in contrasted environments. In all cases, distribution of seeds in the soil was limited to 3 cm depth. No innate dormancy was observed but combination of hard seed coat and hilum opening controlled by environmental...

Factors Limiting Tropical Rain Forest Regeneration in Abandoned Pasture: Seed Rain, Seed Germination, Microclimate, and Soil

Vegetation, seed rain, seed germination, microclimate, and soil physical and chemical parameters were measured in a recently abandoned pasture and adjacent primary rain forest in southern Costa Rica. The goal of this study was to assess the importance of these factors in limiting forest regeneration in abandoned pastures. Seed rain of animal dispersed species decreased dramatically in the pastu...

Soil seed bank size and composition under Pteridium aquilinum invasion in summer rangelands of Bandpay Babol, Mazandaran province

Pteridium aquilinum is known as an invasive species in different ecosystems of the world. The spread of this species is increasing in the north of Iran particularly outside of forest ecosystems. In this study, the amount and composition of soil seed banks in the dense pathes of Pteridium were investigated in summer rangelands of Bandpay in the south of Babol city in Mazandaran province, Iran...

Anatomy and ontogeny of Pterodon emarginatus (Fabaceae: Faboideae) seed.

The aim of this study was to describe the anatomy and ontogeny of Pterodon emarginatus seed using the usual techniques. The ovules are campilotropous, crassinucelate, and bitegmic. The following processes occur during integument development: anticlinal divisions and phenolic compound accumulations in the exotesta, whose cells become palisade; predominantly periclinal divisions and cell expansio...
